In 1543 AD, the Portuguese seized the islands from Bahadur Shah of Gujarat and ruled till 1661. In 1668, the islands were leased to East India Company by Charles II of England when it was named Bombay.

Mumbai is one of the few cities in India, which is home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, namely, the Elephanta Caves, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, and the ensemble of Victorian and Art Deco buildings. The city is home to some of the most expensive buildings in India. The city hosts a vast coastline of about 150 km.
